Our Haileybury Heritage

Haileybury’s story stretches back to the 1800s, and our campus today reflects that rich history. The grounds are home to an exceptional blend of architectural styles, designed by a number of distinguished architects across different eras. Together, they create a unique and inspiring setting for our community. For further details on the history and design of our buildings, please explore our Architectural Guide.

Many of these historic and contemporary buildings house our 13 boarding and day houses. The house system lies at the heart of life at Haileybury, fostering community, belonging and tradition.

1862

Beginnings of Haileybury College

The site in Hertford Heath was bought from the East India Company, and was repurposed as an Independent boys boarding school by Arthur Gray Butler. It opened to pupils on 12 May 1862. Architect Arthur Blomfield adapted the buildings to make the site into a functioning school – including our stunning Chapel. However shortly after completion, the Chapel a fire caused extensive damage – so it was rebuilt 1876-78.

1942

Merger with the Imperial Service College

The School merged with Imperial Service College, Windsor in 1942 to become ‘Haileybury and Imperial Service College’, with all pupils based on the Haileybury grounds. However, the Royal Charter of the School has since been returned to the name Haileybury College in 2023.

1973

Became a coeducational School

Girls were welcomed to the school in 1973, when 12 girls joined 600 boys in Sixth Form. The School has since expanded, and our current pupils are split 50/50 between boys and girls.

2007

As of 2025, we have 4 partner schools including: Haileybury Almaty (Kazakhstan), Haileybury Astana (Kazakhstan), Haileybury Bhaluka (Bangladesh), and Haileybury Malta (Malta).  The School is also a proud sponsor of Haileybury Turnford in Cheshunt.
